SEASIDE: Council considers bill to ban medical pot dispensaries

The Seaside City Council on Thursday heard the first reading of a proposed ordinance outlawing establishment of pot dispensaries in the city. The council is expected to adopt the ordinance after a second reading Aug. 16.

The ordinance would bring to a close a more than a yearlong debate about a medical marijuana dispensary and make Seaside the third city in the county to ban the facilities.

Marina adopted an anti-dispensary ordinance in February. Salinas followed suit in April.

The debate about medical marijuana has been under way since California voters approved Proposition 215 in 1996, which permits cultivation and use of marijuana for medical purposes. It remains a violation of federal law.

Thirty-nine cities prohibit marijuana dispensaries, while 24 allow them.
